Roulette is one of the games that often occurs in Hollywood-movies. Today it’s not only one of the games that gamblers prefer to play on landbased casinos, but on modern online casinos as well.
The history of the game of roulette
Roulette has its roots in the hazard culture, as many of the classic casino games do, and just as blackjack the game originally comes from France. The French-sounding name supports this theory as the word means “small wheel” in French. Roulette has been a game since the 18th century. It is one of the most important games on modern casinos, and you can also find it as cool live games which gives the player a genuine feeling and an impressive gaming experience.
From the beginning, the game wasn’t what we know roulette to be today. The modern roulette version is a mix between different kinds of wheel games from different parts of Europe. The legend says that a mathematician by the name of Pascal invented the French version of the game in the mid-1600s and that the Blanc brothers invented the roulette wheel with it’s symbolic zero around one and a half-century later. Gambling was illegal in France at the time of the Blanc brothers invention, and therefore they had to take the game to Germany. Not long after, one of the brothers opened the first casino in Monte Carlo and the roulette wheel obviously got a prominent place there.
The first appearance of roulette in the USA was at the beginning of the 1800s and the game quickly became extremely popular. However, they chose to add another zero to the wheel to increase the house edge (thus it was a strategical decision from the casino owners). The wheel also featured an eagle to symbolize American freedom, but it didn’t favour the players. Today the eagle is gone, but the wheel still has the double zero in the American version of roulette.
When casino games were introduced online by the end of the 1900s, new versions of the game quickly emerged and they also became very popular. Today players are lucky as many versions offer you to play a few rounds for free, which definitely is a great benefit when it comes to choosing a table and a game, and without having to “waste” money.
Roulette – Gameplay and rules
So roulette is a game with a wheel and a betting area where you place your bets on different outcomes. The dealer is the one who spins the wheel and drops the ball in the spinning wheel. When the ball finally stops at a number, the dealer will confirm who wins the round.
You bet against the casino and no matter how many players there are around the table (wheel), it will not affect the game. You have to predict which number the ball will stop at and choose a betting option. There are both high-risk bets and low-risk bets, which you as a player choose from. Of course, the bets with a higher risk will give a bigger payout than the bets with lower risk.
You’ll bet directly on the roulette table before the round begins, and before the ball is dropped in the spinning wheel. As a player, you can’t make any changes or lay new bets after the ball’s been dropped. Bets in the game are divided into the categories “inside bets” and “outside bets”, where the first category is less likely to happen but gives a higher payout. A lot of the players that play roulette at a professional level choose to lay outside bets since, in the long run, it’s better to win smaller sums a bit more often. The bigger winning possibilities from inside bets are definitely alluring, but if you want to stick to your gaming budget and not risk too much then the outside bets are recommended.
